Hosni Mubarak, a controversial figure, did keep Islamic unrest in Egypt and Palestine in check. Now that freedom has broken out in the Middle East, Palestinians attack Israel day after day. Obama's policy of aiding the unrest in Egypt that overthrew Mubarak knowingly created
this atmosphere of war-like licentiousness. The Muslim Brotherhood, which the Obama admin supported against Mubarak, rose to power in Cairo.
Hamas is reportedly the aggressive element du jour in Palestine that is lobbing rockets at Jerusalem. Now that Hamas has an ally in Cairo, the Muslim Brotherhood, it feels free to attack Israel with impunity, and, perhaps, even with backing. Was this Obama's end game to begin with? The diminution of the Jewish state in the Middle East?
Or was his end game to arrive on the scene and assume the role of Kingpin Peacemaker? Isn't that what Hillary Clinton's arrival in the Middle East this week, 24 hours after an accord had been reached (as reported by Fox News' Jennifer Griffin), was all about? One would have thought one phony Nobel Peace Prize in a lifetime would be enough, but, apparently, not for The One. Or, maybe Hillary Clinton, as Obama's surrogate, is angling for her own Nobel.
No problem has been solved through the latest cease-fire. Israel will now have to escalate into a violent defense of itself every time it wants attention from the Obama admin. Hamas's antics also gained it attention from Washington and press from around the world. This is not a great way for the U.S. to lead.
Where does Israel go from here? Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has now learned that brinksmanship or even not-quite-at-the-brinksmanship will get U.S. attention under it's current leadership. Defending itself militarily earns a visit from the Secretary of State. Perhaps Israel will be aided from pro-Israel folks inside the Democrat party.
Except for praise of the White House and Hillary Clinton, Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkley phrased it well in her press release of today.
I welcome this cease-fire agreement and am hopeful it marks the end of rocket attacks and other violence aimed at Israeli communities and families.
I also applaud the role of the White House and Secretary of State Clinton in helping to broker this truce. Unfortunately this temporary fix does not eliminate the need for true and lasting peace.
I long for a permanent resolution that provides for a side-by-side Palestinian State that can exist in peace alongside Israel, but such an agreement will never happen until Hamas permanently renounces violence and publicly recognizes Israel's right to exist as a Jewish nation.
That is why we must support Israel’s right to defend its borders and its citizens from any renewed attack and respect the right of our trusted ally Israel to do what is necessary for self protection in the face of daily threats from Hamas and its terrorist allies -- including Iran.
And why we should reject international pressure on Israel to halt its pursuit of terrorist leaders when Hamas continues to use Gaza as a launching pad for missiles that have inflicted death and destruction on Israeli cities.
